In the past, using Instagram entailed little more than opening the app, looking at a few photographs, tapping “Like,” and closing it again.
Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case.
What started as a simple feed of your friends’ images evolved into an endless stream of algorithmically produced garbage complete with auto-playing videos and advertisements.
In an effort to compete with TikTok, Instagram is now attempting to introduce a similar app. That’s because Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, Meta, is obsessed with attracting your gaze.
The more time you spend on the site and the more you engage with it (via sharing, commenting, liking, watching videos until the finish, and, most optimally, making a purchase), the more money the company makes.
Apps that start out clean and simple often get overloaded with more types of content, bright red notification icons, and a variety of widgets in an effort to attract and retain users. It’s all part of an elaborate plan to keep your gaze glued for as long as possible.
I’m not here to take away Instagram’s new features if you find that they’re to your liking. If, however, you are exhausted by it all in the same way that I am, I have a solution for you: the online version.

The old-school Instagram
Even while most Instagram users likely just use the desktop version, the mobile app is also available. Simply log into Instagram using the website (instagram.com) and begin browsing.
All of your friends’ photographs are there, and you’ll quickly realize that Instagram’s algorithmic sorting hasn’t made its way here quite yet, so you can peruse it in reverse chronological order like the good old days.
Plus, the web version of Instagram is completely free of commercials and suggested posts. Videos don’t automatically start playing, but you can watch them by clicking the play button. Photos, videos, and “Stories” from the individuals you follow will be all you see.
You may now use Instagram fully without downloading the app by uploading photos and Stories directly from the web. To be sure, not everything is ideal.
Like many mobile interfaces that have been adapted for browsers, scrolling on Instagram on the web can feel clumsy at times. If you don’t use the app at all, you won’t be notified of anything, either.
The latter may be viewed as an advantage by some while being viewed as a deal breaker by others.

Using the Internet to make an Instagram post
