IKEA Hacks Office: IKEA Desk Hacks You Can Easily Tackle at Home

You’ll see IKEA desk after IKEA desk in the nicest home offices on the internet. It’s not that IKEA desks are so popular—because it’s many of these IKEA desks aren’t advertised as desks at all.

Those aren’t desks you’d find in the homes of style-conscious people. They’re workstations made out of kitchen cabinets, dressers, countertops, and more by creative designers.

You may be surprised by the idea of stocking your home office with kitchen necessities. It’s a common practice among decorators.

Design enthusiasts have created unique desks that precisely fit their rooms by combining IKEA pieces—and they haven’t spent a penny doing it.

“I adore IKEA furniture because it’s affordable and versatile,” blogger Medina Grillo explains. “Hacking IKEA furniture only made sense if I was going to try to make a more custom workstation myself.”

  • Multiple Workstations on a Long Ikea Alex Desk

In fact, I built it to be a distance-learning desk for the kids, with a chair in the middle for me. So, it’s not strictly an office, either.

However, as a shared home office, it would be just as useful. We were able to create a more personalized design by building an extra-long desktop to go with the Alex drawer units from Ikea.

I’d add a third Alex drawer unit in the middle if there were just going to be two workstations. Detailed instructions for putting this together and shopping for the space are below.

Office in a Closet

Back when we all thought we’d be quarantined for only a few more weeks, I had a lot of fun redoing this closet office. The Alex drawer unit from Ikea can be seen again. Because it’s my favorite item from Ikea’s office furniture line, I keep it in my workspace almost constantly!

  • Make Your Own Foathing Desks

IKEA’s Kvissle and Skadis wall organization systems are included in the desk, but not the actual desk itself. It’s a terrific space-saving and low-cost DIY desk choice for a child’s room or a laptop in the living room. Check out the steps we took below to build it.
