The animated family flicks about toys that come to life when their human owners aren’t around are Pixar’s most successful series. Although it could be a while until the new film hits theaters, fans can expect to see the majority of the original cast return.
Disney has confirmed that Toy Story 5 will bring audiences back to the world of Woody and Buzz. During the 2023 year-end earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that Pixar was working on a new Toy Story sequel. Toy Story 6 follows Toy Story 4 and the next Lightyear (2022).
Toy Story 5 will be hoping to add to the almost $3.3 billion that the Pixar series, which marked the entrance of the animation studio in 1995, has already earned for Disney at the box office. This is all the information we have about Toy Story 5.
Toy Story 5 Potential Release Date
Disney CEO Bob Iger said in February 2023 that a fifth Toy Story film was in production, over four years after the release of the fourth film. Iger also announced that sequels to two other successful Disney series were in development.
During the first quarter of 2023, Disney reported an increase in sales of 8% to $23.5 billion and an increase in total Disney+ subscribers of roughly 8% to 161.8 million. Still, the movie’s production schedule is by no means set in stone, and we’ll make sure to update this page as soon as any new details emerge.

Toy Story 5 Plot
Another possibility is that Toy Story 5 will repeat the formula. Even if Toy Story 5 is being made just for financial gain, Pixar will no doubt come up with another amazing and heartwarming tale. Without destroying their original parting, Woody might make a brief cameo appearance where Buzz asks for his assistance as the movie follows Buzz and Bonnie’s other toys on a new trip.
Alternatively, the film might split in half, with the first part focusing on Woody and the gang of misplaced toys, and the second on Bonnie’s toys. Many viewers were taken aback by the announcement of Toy Story 5 because they had thought the story had come to a close with Toy Story 4.
The story of Woody and Buzz’s relationship is concluded in Toy Story 3, as producer Mark Nielsen explained at the time: “We regard Toy Story 3 as the end of Woody’s time with Andy.” In that film, Woody and Bo Peep were reunited, and by the conclusion of it, Woody had decided to stay with Bo Peep, leaving the rest of the gang behind as they left with Bonnie.
Toy Story 5’s plot details are yet unknown. It seems likely that Woody and Buzz will be reunited in this film after saying farewell at the end of the last film, as hinted at by a tweet from Tim Allen after Disney’s announcement.
A statement made by Allen reads as follows: “I feel sorry for you, Woody because you seem to be such a depressed and peculiar little man. Now on to the fifth and final! Far out, in space and time!” As soon as we have further information, we will post it here.

Toy Story 5 Cast – Who Will Be Returning?
Tom Hanks’ return as Woody is a virtual certainty at this point, and as was said up top, Tim Allen appears to have already announced on Twitter that he will be back as Buzz after Chris Evans played a different version of the character in the spin-off film Lightyear.
See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to a number 5! To infinity and beyond! pic.twitter.com/bwRzE487Vi

Who is Making Toy Story 5?
Toy Story 4 was directed by Josh Cooley, who took over for John Lasseter, who directed the first three films in the franchise but departed Pixar in 2017 amid sexual misconduct allegations. Toy Story 5 will not have Cooley as its director because he has gone on from Pixar to work on an animated Transformers film for Paramount, set for release in 2024.
Expect someone at Pixar, where a lot of talented people work, to be given the keys for the fifth picture. Production on Toy Story 5 has begun at Pixar. There is no confirmed release date for Toy Story 5, and Bob Iger gave no hints as to how far along production might be.
