Insofar as this hack appears to work, Tom Mabe, a comic, appears to be taking this hack quite seriously. (Only a few commenters thought it was funny.)

Even if he’s mocking air fryer enthusiasts (rude), it appears that adding liquid to his machine has some effect. As an example of his actions, consider the following:

  • Make the Air Fryer as filthy as possible with grease and food waste.
  • Rinse the drawer with warm water and add a small amount of detergent.
  • Switch on the machine as though you were creating something by putting the drawer back in.
  • Pop it in the oven for 15 minutes at 200 degrees.
  • Wash dishes by hand and flush the filthy water down the drain as you normally would.

I don’t know what’s going on here.

A video posted by Tanya’s home in so shows someone using dish soap and water to clean an air fryer basket that has been used previously. In the air fryer, they then put the basket in and set the temperature to 200°F for three minutes.

After that, the basket is thoroughly cleaned, and it looks brand new. In this case, even the best air fryers can’t contain this much water, which is why this method is not recommended.

In the video, it’s hard to determine exactly how much water is used, but the basket’s base is immersed and it appears to be about half-full. The air movement from the fan might easily spray water from the surface into the interior electrical components of your air fryer at this height, resulting in a short circuit.

In an attempt to ‘cook’ this much water, your air fryer may overheat, posing a fire hazard. This is not to suggest that water cannot be added to the basket – 1-2 teaspoons can be added prior to cooking in order to keep moisture.

Steam would form as a result of this small amount of water being burned. It is also possible to decrease smoke by adding a tiny amount of water to assist contain any fatty drippings.

So you won’t have to worry about your kitchen filling up with that awful smell and it will be much easier to clean up as a result.

A classic air fryer, on the other hand, cannot be used to cook or steam. Because these devices are convection ovens, they can’t achieve a temperature high enough to boil water, which is why you should never put raw rice grains in an air fryer.

This is also counterproductive, as the air fryer’s vents will let out any generated steam. The bottom line is that adding more water to your air fryer than a couple of teaspoons is a bad idea.

When should I clean my air fryer, and how frequently?

Each time you use your air fryer, be sure to wipe the basket. Remove any leftover food with a paper towel after the air fryer has cooled. Clean the fryer basket and drip pan with a new paper towel. The air fryer can be used again after the basket is inserted into the pan.

The internal walls of your air fryer should be thoroughly cleaned if you observe any buildup of oil or food. Cleaning your air fryer should be done at least once a month, or more frequently for those who use the appliance regularly.
