The renowned lead vocalist and composer of the legendary Celtic punk band the Pogues, Shane MacGowan, has died at the age of 65 after a nearly yearlong battle with encephalitis. A statement released by the family expressed their deep sorrow and praised MacGowan, calling her their “most beautiful, darling and dearly beloved,” according to The Guardian’s citation of the message.
Shane Macgowan Cause of Death
Shane MacGowan, lead singer of The Pogues, passed away at the age of 65 after a battle with encephalitis.
His family announced his death at 3am on November 30 from complications related to a heart attack at Dublin’s St. Vincent’s Hospital.
“It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Shane MacGowan,” wrote his father and sister in a social media message alongside his wife of over 35 years, Victoria Mary Clarke. With his wife Victoria and family by his side, Shane passed away gently at 3am this morning, 30 November 2023. His loved ones found solace in the reading of prayers and funeral rites.
Viral encephalitis kept MacGowan in the intensive care unit for the better part of a month. This was revealed to him a year ago.
However, the signs and symptoms of encephalitis are unclear.
What is Encephalitis?
Inflammation of the brain, or encephalitis, is a simple definition. Serious complications, including comas, necessitate immediate medical attention in a hospital setting.
Although the elderly are the most common victims, anyone can catch the disease. The immune system launching an incorrect assault on brain tissue, viruses like chicken pox and cold sores, or infections caused by bacteria or fungi are the root causes. But contracting the disease from such kinds of infections is really unusual.
Depending on the root cause, treatment may involve the following, as stated by the NHS:
- anti-viral drugs
- injections of steroids
- therapies that assist in managing the immune system
- drugs that kill bacteria or fungi
- anti-inflammatory drugs to alleviate pain or fever
- medication to manage convulsions
- assistance with respiration, including the use of a respirator or oxygen delivered through a face mask
I just wanted to say a massive thanks to everyone who has been messaging me and @ShaneMacGowan and thank you 🙏 @spiderstacy and Terry Woods for coming to visit him ❤️love and prayers for everyone who is struggling right now ❤️hang in there! pic.twitter.com/9OrUdgPxEd

What Are the Symptoms?
Vaccines can offer some protection, but they can’t guarantee a person won’t get sick. Some examples of such vaccines are the MMR, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella; the Japanese encephalitis vaccine, which is advised for tourists going to regions prone to the disease, such certain regions in Asia; and the rabies vaccine.
Breathing apparatus was used to treat MacGowan, who was in critical care until he passed away.
Flu, high fever, and headaches are some of the early signs.
Severe symptoms may not appear until hours or weeks have passed. Typical examples are:
- feeling lost or confused
- convulsions as well as
- behavioral and character shifts
- communication challenges
- immobility or weakening in certain bodily regions
- collapse unconsciousness
- shingles that spread to the eyes (as MacGowan experienced).
