Farah’s Health Condition & Disability
At the age of five, Farrah received a diagnosis of Primary Immune Deficiency Disorder (PIDD). An uncommon genetic illness called PIDD makes the body’s immune system target its organs, mainly the lungs. Chronic lung infections, inflammation, scarring, breathing difficulties, growth retardation, exhaustion, fever, and weight gain or loss are the results of this, depending on which illness impacts organs.
Farrah’s prior immune system assaulting her organs, starting when she was two years old, caused her to suffer from PIDD for the majority of her childhood. For a brief period, her immune system’s capacity to produce antibodies had to be temporarily increased through monthly immunoglobulin replacement therapy. She never truly experienced long-term success with these treatments, though.
Farrah signed up for an NIH clinical study in 2014 in an attempt to pinpoint the gene that may be causing her immunological issues. Unfortunately, the study ran longer than anticipated and had to be stopped immediately because of some problems.
Farrah underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2017 via the National Marrow Donor Program “Be The Match” from an unrelated donor. Through this process, a healthy immune system that matched her tissue type was implanted in place of her damaged one. With a new lease on life, Farrah’s transplant gave her a significant advantage in maintaining her health into her adolescence and beyond.
