Richard Gere’s Wife Talks About His Health Scare in Mexico with Pneumonia: “Almost Back to Normal”

Richard Gere can finally go out and have fun.

The 73-year-old actor got pneumonia while on vacation in Mexico for his wife Alejandra Silva’s 40th birthday. He had to go to the hospital, but he seems to be better now.

“As you can see, we are all mostly better,” Silva wrote in the post’s caption. She had said in an earlier update that she herself had been dealing with sinusitis and an ear infection.

On Saturday, Silva posted a slideshow of photos to Instagram showing all the fun she had with friends on her special day. One of the photos was of Gere smiling at Silva’s birthday cake, which had sparklers on top, and another was of the two of them in a sweet embrace.

Gere has been steadily getting better for a while now, as Silva wrote on February 19 that “the worst has already passed.” Two days later, she told fans that Richard was feeling much better and that their two young sons, who had also gotten sick, were also fine.

Gere and Carey Lowell have two children together, Alexander, 4, and James, 2. Gere also has a 23-year-old son named Homer with his ex-wife, Carey Lowell. Silva is also the mother of Albert, who is 10 years old, from a previous marriage.

Before they started dating for the first time in 2014, Gere and Silva had known each other for more than ten years.

In April 2018, a person close to the couple told PEOPLE that they had gotten married “weeks and weeks ago” and were “extraordinarily happy.” The person added, “They’re so comfortable with each other, have fun together, and are looking forward to their future together.”

A film source who has known Gere for years told PEOPLE that he has been much happier in the second half of his life, now that he is settled, confident, and doing what he wants.
