Kailin Willow Olson entered the world on August 18, 1975, in Portland, Oregon. Her mother, Melinda Leora, was a nurse, while her father, Donald Lee Olson, worked in publishing.

When she was eight years old, her family moved back to the Portland area from Spokane and Vashon Island, Washington (in Puget Sound).
