Emily Compagno was born in Oakland, California, at the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in the east of the city. She was born in El Cerrito, California, and grew up there. Her parents were Katherine Bertsch, whose family is from England, Bohemia, and Baden-Wurttemberg, and John Compagno, whose family is from Sicily.
She got her B.A. in political science from the University of Washington, where she also won the Cadet of the Quarter Award from the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps. In 2006, she got her J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law, where she was President of the Federalist Society and Articles Editor of the Intellectual Property Bulletin.
