It has been claimed that Ridley Scott is finalizing talks with Paul Mescal to cast him in the upcoming picture, Gladiator 2. Twenty-four years after the original Gladiator picture was released, a release date has finally been set.
Variety has announced that the release date for the Gladiator sequel is slated for November 22, 2024. Paramount Pictures also said that Normal People star Paul Mescal is in final negotiations to play the lead role in the picture. Scott, Michael Pruss, and Doug Wick of Red Wagon Entertainment will produce the sequel.
Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Russell Crowe, was a prominent character in the movie. Actor Joaquin Phoenix played Commodus, and this actor represented a Roman soldier who was thrown into slavery but swore vengeance against him.
Gladiator 2 Release Date
As of the 22nd of November, 2024, Gladiator 2 will be available in theaters. The movie’s pre-production is picking up speed, with casting calls and decisions on filming sites, and the sequel is scheduled to begin principal photography somewhere in the middle of 2023.
The production will begin once Ridley Scott wraps up filming his other historical epic, the biopic Kitbag, about Napoleon. Everything fits neatly into the expected release window of late 2024. Because Gladiator was a joint effort between Fox and Universal.
The latter has the option to return to the fold for the sequel. With a $460 million worldwide total, eleven Oscar nods (including best picture and best actor for Crowe), and five wins, Gladiator is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

Gladiator 2 Plot
Gladiator 2 appears to be shifting its focus to Lucius Verus after the deaths of Maximus and Commodus. In addition to Russell Crowe’s confirmation of the news, the casting of Paul Mescal in the title role provided more confirmation of the rumor. He discussed his supper with Ridley Scott and their conversation about the film on the Fitzy and Wappa podcast.
I have a general idea of how he plans to develop the plot. The “My name is” phrase is referenced because, as you may recall, there was a small youngster who aspired to beat the Gladiator. Therefore, the boy has matured into a man and is now the Emperor, as Crowe put it. I don’t know what occurs after that, but that’s a general idea.
In other words, it’s not a remake. This is not a continuation of the previous story. It’s not the day after, or even 30 years after,” he went on to clarify. In truth, we still know very little about the Gladiator 2 narrative beyond the general time period and the knowledge that it will center on Lucius.
As we get closer to manufacturing, additional information will become available. Very outlandish ideas have been floated for Gladiator 2, including an immortal Maximus fighting in the Vietnam War, but these have all been abandoned. We can rule out the possibility of that happening.

Gladiator 2 Cast
As of this writing, Paul Mescal is the only confirmed cast member for Gladiator 2. The actor who played Lucius Verus in the TV show Normal People and the recent indie smash Aftersun will be playing the adult version of the character in the film. This means that Spencer Treat Clark will not be returning to the role.
As for the rest of the original cast, it has been speculated that Spencer Treat Clark (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story), Connie Nielsen (Wonder Woman), and Djimon Hounsou (Black Adam, Shazam!) may reprise their roles as Lucius, Lucilla, and Maximus’s ally Juba. Scott will be back in the director’s chair for the follow-up, and screenwriter Peter Craig will also be returning for the project.
How to Watch Gladiator 2
There’s a good chance that Gladiator 2 will get a massive, exclusive theatrical release. This is because, because of the high expectations set by its predecessor’s financial success, Gladiator 2 will be one of the most financially lucrative new releases of the year when it finally arrives in theaters.
In addition to a wide theatrical release, Gladiator 2 will also debut on video-on-demand (VOD) platforms and, eventually, on streaming services. Check out our rundown of every significant release scheduled for 2023 for more cinematic mayhem.
