Kevin Smith wrote, produced, directed, and edited Clerks III. It’s a sequel to the 1994 and 2006 films and the ninth film in the View Askewniverse. The film stars Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Rosario Dawson, Trevor Fehrman, Jason Mewes, and Smith.

Lionsgate will release the film in 2022.

Clerk 3 Planning

Kevin Smith hinted at a Clerks III during promotion for Clerks II. stating “If there’s a Clerks III, it’ll be in my 40s or 50s, when Dante and Randal may be interesting to revisit. My guess is that at 45, sitting against a wall in front of a convenience store would be a bit depressing for Jay and Bob.”

Jeff Anderson said humorously, “Oh, don’t get me started,” referring to his well-known misgivings about making Clerks II when originally approached by Smith.

After viewing the Theresa Rebeck comedy Seminar starring Alan Rickman, Smith showed interest in developing Clerks III as a Broadway play on March 29, 2012.

This edition of Hollywood Babble-On was released on December 10, 2012, and revealed further details about Smith’s plans for Clerks III. For example, Anderson and Scott Mosier had to wait until an ongoing audit over residuals from Clerks II with The Weinstein Company was concluded.

It was also revealed that Smith intends to crowdsource Clerks III via Kickstarter or Indiegogo, with backers receiving DVDs, posters, and even more roles in the film.

On June 5, 2013, he rethought crowdsourcing, saying “I have money. Worst case, I can erect my house.”  Smith wrote a script for Clerks III from March to May 2013, calling it the series’ “Empire Strikes Back.”

Jason Mewes revealed in July 2013 that they were merely waiting on money from The Weinstein Company.

On September 26, 2014, Smith said on his Hollywood Babble-On podcast: “My life would be a mess if I hadn’t created that film. I’m back in films. I’ve got three lined up, and this is fantastic. Tusk was the only way to Clerks III.

Tusk helped me get funding for Clerks III “. Smith added: “A year ago, I was urgently trying to get Clerks III made for the 20th anniversary. And I must have reeked of desperation since I couldn’t find any money.

Tusk, people saying ‘Holy fuck! What else?’ Clerks III, done. So, thank you to everyone who said, “He failed, he failed.” So never trust anyone who tells you your tale, guy. You know it. YOU WRITE THE STORY”

Filming began on August 2, 2021, in Red Bank, New Jersey.

Clerks 3 Release Date

This release excites veteran Smith fans. In 1994, he made his directorial debut with Clerks, based on his own experience working at a Quick Stop in Leonardo, New Jersey. Smith wrote and directed the film, and close friend Jay Mewes played Silent Bob’s stoner sidekick Jay.

The titular clerks were played by Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson.

Clerks II starred Rosario Dawson and Trevor Fehrman in 2006. Kevin Smith had planned to make a third film for years, but it wasn’t until August that production began.

In the new film, Randal (Jeff Anderson) and Dante (Brian O’Halloran) make a movie about their experiences as clerks at the Quick Stop, as Smith did in real life. Reunited with Smith and Mewes. Smith said Clerks III will appear around 2022.

What About The Storyline of Clerk 3?

“The Tao says ‘To be great is to go on.’ Onward and upward. ‘Far is home.’ Thanks to Lionsgate, we get to see practically the whole original cast! As a tribute to both the eternal fascination of cinema and the inventiveness and craziness of its creators, we’re filming the entire film on location in New Jersey for the first time since 1993.

“Dante and Randal made me a filmmaker years ago, and now it’s my turn,” Smith added.

Some of Kevin’s films, such as Dogma, Red State, and the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot are beloved parts of our catalog that continue to please Kevin’s fans. We’re happy to bring the newest chapter in the Clerks saga to audiences worldwide, said Eda Kowan, the film’s producer at Lionsgate.

This sequel excites me, even though it is 10 years late. Maybe the extra time allowed Smith to refine the script and figure out his message with this trilogy. The original is a cult classic, and I’m excited to see how Smith ends it.

The foul-mouthed filmmaker’s next project is the animated Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation. The series will debut on Netflix on July 23.

Final Lines

The third installment of Clerks has a lot to offer fans. In November, Smith revealed how he reproduced moments from 1994 original, hinting that it resembled a film. He said he would open up the movie on smartphones near the displays to compare pictures.

For Smith, recreating certain scenes as close to the original as possible evoked that first experience, recapturing moments that may have been taken for granted at the time.

Clerks 3 is coming out this year, over a decade after the last sequel.

Comparing the new Clerks cast images with the original shows how much time has gone and how committed the cast is to Smith. Fans can re-enter the View Askewniverse and view the first two films while waiting for Clerks 3 to be released.
