AMAs controversy
Whilst he wasn’t in attendance at the recent American Music Awards (AMA 2022), he was booed by the audience upon winning the best male R&B artist award, in which good friend Kelly Rowland collected the award and defended his honour.
Surprised by the audience’s reaction, she asked the crowd: “Excuse me… chill out,” as cameras panned to show the audience. She continued: “But I wanted to tell Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music, and I want to tell him ‘thank you for being an incredible performer’. I’ll take this award [and] bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations. And congratulations to all the nominees in this category.”
Chris Brown was expected to perform a tribute to the legendary Michael Jackson on the 40th anniversary of ‘Thriller’ at the AMA’s. However, the performance was cancelled just days beforehand. Chris Brown shared his frustration on Instagram, saying, “They cancelled me for reasons unknown”. Not wanting efforts to go to waste, the singer shared videos from a rehearsal showing him performing a lengthy routine in Jackson’s honour.
It was later clarified that the tribute being pulled was a matter of creative direction and no fault of Brown’s.“Live shows change all the time, it’s the nature of this business; unfortunately, this element of the AMAs didn’t come together as we couldn’t align on the performance, to no fault of Chris Brown,” the statement read.
