Reo Kurosu, the show’s producer, described the show’s animation style as “”For this series, we’re aiming to achieve something new,” she says, describing it as “a blend between 2D and 3D.” Because the director is a 2D animator, everything that goes on in his head and on the storyboard is in 2D.

Then it’s a matter of deciding whether to employ full CG animation, traditional 2D animation, or a hybrid of the two. The director, as well as the 2D and 3D studios, will meet to determine what to use when, based on what we’re attempting to achieve with each scene.”

Cel shading is used to make the 3D figures and objects look more like 2D animation. The shadows on 3D objects have a linear hatching effect that simulates shading with a pen or pencil, and the same hatching effect is applied to the shadows on any 2D models to provide a more uniform look.

Meghan Sullivan, an IGN contributor, gave the first episode an 8.5 out of 10 rating. “Despite the somewhat distracting graphics, ‘The Branded Swordsman’ gets Guts’ quest for revenge off to a solid start,” Sullivan wrote in his review, praising the episode’s directing.

In a review for Kotaku, writer Cecilia D’Anastasio praised the first episode, even saying that it “already outshines the 1990s original.” D’Anastasio, however, noted the series’ poor animation quality, concluding, “The game Berserk is not for the faint of heart.

‘The Branded Swordsman,’ on the other hand, demonstrated to me that directors of fighting-heavy anime are putting more effort into beautifying and civilizing the genre, giving honor to manga that shows writing and innovation.”

In his review of episodes 1–3, Anime News Network contributor Jacob Hope Chapman criticized the show’s production quality, saying, “Berserk 2016 is an abominably ugly and almost forcefully unpleasant realization of our dreams, with cut-rate CGI, questionable music choices, and disorienting camera work.”

“Once you manage to unclench your teeth at all those garish cel-shaded puppet bodies smacking against each other, Miura’s compelling story and captivating world still shine as one-of-a-kind flights of dark imagination with poignant characterization, even as they struggle under such a lackluster production,” he says, “Miura’s compelling story and captivating world still shine as one-of-a-kind flights of dark imagination with poignant characterization, even as they struggle under such
