The return of American Horror Stories has given us a third reason to be terrified: more stories to watch. In the premiere episode, titled Bestie, a socially shy girl named Shelby makes an online best friend who never leaves her house due to her handicap and the two become inseparable.
The episode tells the story of how Shelby’s life is altered by their relationship. Some individuals have complained on the internet that the book is offensive because it demonizes persons with disabilities. Instead, we believe that switching roles throughout a dispute is productive. Is there any way in which the story may have been different if the mysterious girl hadn’t been physically impaired?

How Does Shelby Escape From Bestie Manipulation?
It was clear that Shelby did not understand the gravity of her father’s punishment, and she resented him for locking her up. There’s an old laptop among the discarded items, so Shelby uses it to get in touch with her best friend, who suggests that she self-injure in order to escape. If she needed medical attention, her father would have to take her out of the house.
When Shelby expresses her anxiety, Bestie manipulates her by suggesting that if Shelby truly considered them friends, Bestie would tell her to break a bone. Shelby breaks her own hand in her frantic attempt to maintain the bond. But, surprisingly, that serves as her alarm clock. From that moment on, she begins completely ignoring and blocking Bestie, despite the fact that she still sends her messages.

Who Was Killed Bestie Or Shelby?
Shelby begins to pick up the pieces of her life after cutting off Bestie. She seeks help from a therapist, reconciles with her father by rebuilding the broken cup, and asks forgiveness from her teacher, who accepts her apology. When Shelby finally starts being herself, she meets new people and things improve for her. However, Bestie’s messages have continued uninterrupted throughout this period.
She warns Shelby that she will be punished severely if she continues to disregard her. We are not told definitively if Shelby informed anyone else about Bestie. We think she didn’t, because if she had, it would have sparked a thorough examination into the girl’s background. We don’t think Shelby told anyone about her, though, because she wasn’t mentioned once.

The Strange Death and Bestie Turn Caused by River
When Shelby turns around to confront Bestie, she finds his pocketknife buried in her chest after realizing that the eerie abandoned house River brought her to is indeed where he resides. While River and Shelby were just becoming friends, he confided in her that he had been bullied by the same gang of students who had harassed her. He found the fact that one of the students poisoned the others during the school’s production of Macbeth to be both admirable and justifiable, but he had the guts to really carry it out until Bestie forced him to kill Shelby.
As she did with Shelby, River fell for Bestie’s manipulation of his feelings of isolation and loneliness. Shelby’s best friend, Bestie, used to say to her all the time, “Face your fear,” which was first a motivating mantra but eventually became an order that led Shelby to put herself in increasingly perilous situations in order to get her approval. River claimed to Shelby that he had been observing her throughout the school year, which is roughly the same amount of time that Shelby had been communicating with Bestie. If Bestie was manipulating River at the same time, she likely instructed River to kill Shelby as a test of his loyalty.
