American singer, songwriter, and musician Vincent Grant Gill was born on April 12, 1957, and has achieved great success in the country music genre. In the 1970s, he rose to fame as the frontman of the country rock group Pure Prairie League. In 1983, he went solo and continued to acquire success.

Gill turned down Mark Knopfler’s invitation to join Dire Straits, but she did provide backup vocals for the album On Every Street.

In 1981, Gill departed from Pure Prairie League to become a member of Cherry Bombs, the backing band for Rodney Crowell. It was then that he worked with Tony Brown and Emory Gordy Jr., who would go on to produce numerous albums for Gill. Here Today is a bluegrass album that Gill made with David Grisman and other musicians prior to landing a solo contract with RCA.

Gill’s CDs didn’t sell well, despite the fact that he enjoyed some success with RCA and had top ten country hits like “If It Weren’t for Him,” “Oklahoma Borderline,” and “Cinderella.” He rejoined Tony Brown as producer after signing with MCA Records in 1989, and the two collaborated on his first platinum-selling album When I Call Your Name.

After this triumph, he released two more highly successful albums: I Still Believe in You (1991) and Pocket Full of Gold (1991), which had the hit single of the same name that peaked at No. 1 on the American Country charts.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Gill maintained a string of trendy albums due to his skillful guitar playing, soulful tenor voice, and exceptional lyrics. As of 2018, Gill holds the record for the most Grammy Awards ever won by a country musician with 21, and he has won more CMA Awards than any other singer in history, according to AllMusic.
