Susan Abigail Tomalin was born in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, USA, on October 4, 1946. Her father, Philip Tomalin, is English, Irish, and Welsh, while her mother, Lenora Marie, is Italian. Her eight siblings, four brothers and four sisters, raised her in New Jersey. Her father worked as both a television producer and an advertising executive.

Susan went to Edison as a child. She graduated from the Catholic University of America with a bachelor’s degree in drama. At Catholic University, she studied under the legendary drama instructor and coach, Father Gilbert Hartke.
