Select Midwestern Pet Foods’ dog and cat food recalled for potential salmonella risk

Months after Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. recalled dozens of products potentially linked to the deaths of more than 70 dogs, the company is voluntarily recalling select dog and cat food that may be contaminated with salmonella.

The Evansville, Indiana, family-owned company says the new recall is for specific lots and expiration dates of 10 of its dog and cat food brands in a recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration website Tuesday. The recalled products were distributed to retail stores nationwide and to online retailers. Consumers are advised to “not feed the recalled products to pets or any other animals” while retailers have been told to pull the products from store shelves and inventory. The recall is the result of “a routine sampling program by the company which revealed that the finished products may contain the bacteria.” All other Midwestern Pet Foods products are unaffected by this recall, the recall states.

While there is a lengthy list of affected products posted on both the FDA and the company’s websites, “no human or pet illnesses have been reported to date.” The affected products were produced at the company’s Monmouth, Illinois production facility within under 10 brand names: CanineX, Earthborn Holistic, Venture, Unrefined, Sportmix Wholesomes, Pro Pac, Pro Pac Ultimates, Sportstrail, Sportmix and Meridian. “Destroy the food in a way that children, pets and wildlife cannot access them. Wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups and storage containers,” the recall notice states. “Always ensure you wash and sanitize your hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food.”

In a statement on its website, the company calls itself a fourth-generation family-owned company that “has been committed to ensuring that our products are safe and nutritious for nearly 100 years.” In December, the company recalled some of its Sportmix pet food after reports that the food was linked to multiple dog deaths and may contain potentially unsafe levels of aflatoxin, a byproduct of mold. The recall was expanded in January to more of the company’s brands and products and the FDA said it was investigating.
