Episode 3 features Bill and Frank maneuvering through life amid the pandemic. Frank becomes ill at some point and eventually becomes crippled. They’d been together for 13 years when they finally decided to call it quits. Joel arrives at their house and reads Bill’s letter, in which he announces his intention to leave everything to himself and Tess.
Joel and Ellie load up Bill’s car and head out in search of Tommy. In spite of the impending doom of the planet, the episode was a magnificent love tale, and it was handled with great sensitivity and visual beauty.

The mysterious Kathleen, played by Melanie Lynskey, is not featured in the video game, but she makes an appearance in the HBO trailer for Episode 4 of The Last of Us. Ellie and Joel argue in the commercial as they use maps to go to their destination, Kansas City, but find up in the wrong place.
There, instead of helping an injured person on the street, Joel races away in his car, runs over some spikes, and crashes. The scene cuts to brief glimpses of Kathleen questioning a suspect, militiamen smashing through a door, Ellie dodging abandoned vehicles, Joel engaging in combat, and Joel assuring Ellie that they will survive.
