On February 24, 1956, in Flint, Michigan, Howard Bragman was born to Myrna Wolin and Leonard Bragman. His family was Jewish, and he grew up in the same place where he was born. Bragman got his Bachelor of Arts in journalism and psychology from the University of Michigan in 1978.

Bragman looked for a job in public relations and crisis management after he graduated. He was the vice president of the Chicago and Los Angeles offices of Burson-Marsteller Public Relations.
