“As It Was” is the first song from Harry Styles‘ upcoming third album, Harry’s House. “As It Was,” the follow-up to a turntable teaser earlier this week, has finally debuted on the web with a predictable euphoric splash: At 7 p.m. EST, 371,000 people were watching the music video, which featured Styles dancing to synth-pop trills in a scarlet sequined jumpsuit. In addition to a record-breaking video viewing, we’re forecasting the best-of-the-best in thirst memes due to Styles’ appearance in the video.

In contrast to “Watermelon Sugar,” which appeared to be about female orgasm, as immediately deduced by fans on Twitter, this song does not appear to be about that. “As It Was,” on the other hand, is an energetic synth-pop song with an introspective, even sad, tone. “As It Was,” which is reminiscent of the more introspective songs on Styles’ album Fine Line, explores the singer’s contradictory sentiments about the success he’s achieved, the kind that could be problematic for his mental health as well as his romantic life. Styles’ new album, which he stated will be released on May 20th, appears to have this as a central theme.

It was only a matter of time before fans realized that the song was a reference to Styles’s on-again, off-again lover Olivia Wilde, the director of the film Don’t Worry, Darling, which caused her name to go viral on Twitter within minutes of its release. On lines mentioning “two kids” and “leaving the United States,” many listeners were particularly interested. With ex-husband Jason Sudeikis, Wilde has two children. Styles, on the other hand, isn’t going to confirm any inspiration: In November 2021, the singer told the magazine Dazed that he has “tried to compartmentalize my personal life and my career life.”

Apart from new songs, Styles has had a bright year: He was recently seen filming My Policeman with Princess Diana, gyrating his hips on Harryween, releasing his beauty brand Pleasing, or lining up in London for hours outside the Shroom Bloom pop-up store.

A young Harry Styles once said, “I would have been frightened for everything to stop” when he was in the boy band “One Direction.” “I had no idea who I was outside of the band.” People saying, “We don’t like your music anymore, so please leave” no longer frightens me. I believe it did at one point in time. It allows me to exclaim, ‘Great!’ whenever the mood strikes. I’m not operating from a place of fear when it comes to my profession. When I work, I’m motivated by a desire to figure things out and experiment with new ideas.”

Come on, Harry, we wanna say “Goodnight” to you!

The “As It Was” lyrics and music video is below.

Come on, Harry, we wanna say “Goodnight” to you

Holdin’ me back
Gravity’s holdin’ me back
I want you to hold out the palm of your hand
Why don’t we leave it at that?
Nothin’ to say
And everything gets in the way
Seems you cannot be replaced
And I’m the one who will stay, oh-oh-oh

In this world, it’s just us
You know it’s not the same as it was
In this world, it’s just us
You know it’s not the same as it was
As it was, as it was
You know it’s not the same

Answer the phone
Harry, you’re no good alone
Why are you sitting at home on the floor?
What kinda pills are you on?”
Ringin’ the bell
And nobody’s coming to help
Your daddy lives by himself
He just wants to know that you’re well, oh-oh-oh

In this world, it’s just us
You know it’s not the same as it was
In this world, it’s just us
You know it’s not the same as it was
As it was, as it was
You know it’s not the same

Goin’ home, get ahead, light speed internet
I don’t wanna talk about the way that it was
Leave America, two kids, fall in love
I don’t wanna talk about who’s doing it first

Hey!
As it was
You know it’s not the same as it was
As it was, as it was
