After receiving offers, Spoelstra decided to accept a basketball scholarship from his hometown’s University of Portland. In 1989, he was voted West Coast Conference (WCC) freshman of the year. For four years, starting point guard Spoelstra led the Pilots in scoring with 9.2 points, 4.4 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game.
