Carl Michael Edwards II spent his entire youth in the city of Columbia, Missouri, where he was born on August 15th, 1979. After graduating from Rock Bridge High School in 1997, Edwards decided to enroll at the University of Missouri after learning he was eligible for state financial aid.
Edwards dropped out of college after three semesters of engineering study to focus on his racing career, occasionally working as a substitute teacher to make ends meet.

Career
When the opportunity to race in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series presented itself to Edward in 2002, his career took off. Edwards began racing professionally for Roush Racing in 2003, the same year he was named the series’ Rookie of the Year for his outstanding performance.
After competing in the Busch Series part-time, Edwards created history by winning the Aaron’s 312 and the Golden Corral 500 in the span of two days, prompting him to join the Nextel Cup Series as a full-time driver.
No other driver has previously accomplished winning both the Busch and Nextel series races on the same weekend in Atlanta before Edwards, and no other driver has done so since.
