Thanks to commercial photos and leaks that have appeared in recent weeks—including an exclusive first look at a 16-bit X-Men ’97 episode—interest in the series is at an all-time high. Whether or not X-Men ’97 is a part of the main MCU or the growing multiverse, it has a devoted fan base that will undoubtedly tune in when the animated series returns.
It is evident that there is a lack of fan interest in the MCU given Marvel’s poor box office performance and the low viewership of the Disney Plus series Secret Invasion. This potential audience could breathe new life into the weak franchise.
Younger viewers, though, could be more interested in learning how the X-Men fit into the canonical MCU. When Ms. Marvel disclosed that Kamala Khan is a mutant, that was the first hint. Next, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast appeared in a post-credits scene from The Marvels. However, significant developments for the first live-action standalone MCU X-Men project remain elusive.
