Was James Baldwin Gay?
Yes, James Baldwin was a gay racial activist. Baldwin had relationships with both men and women, despite his resistance to categorization regarding his se*uality. He advocated for trans and non-binary identities and wrote extensively about homose*uality and relationships between two guys in his writings.
Despite the National Museum of African American History’s (NMAAHC) assertion that he always desired children, he never married or had children. Nonetheless, scholars frequently refer to him as “gay.” Michelle Gordon, an Emory University visiting assistant professor of African American studies, stated:
“Being Black in America. Being Black and gay in America. Being a Black American in Europe. Being Black and gay in the world. It all gives him outsider status, which allows him the ability to see the world so clearly because he did not quite fit.”
Baldwin, according to NMAAHC, looked for a guy to settle down with and start a family, a home, and a life with until his death, but this never materialized.
