The critically acclaimed Catherine the Great dramedy has been revived for a third season of ten episodes. The news was made during Disney’s winter press tour session at the Television Critics Association.
In a delightfully free take on history, the satiric series from creator Tony McNamara (The Favourite) stars Elle Fanning (Maleficent) as the longest-reigning female queen in Russia’s history. Catherine takes the throne in the second season, which premiered in November, as she attempts to bring enlightenment to the kingdom.
In November, McNamara told The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast that he didn’t know how many seasons the series will have.
“At the moment, I try not to look too far ahead. At the end of season two, I didn’t quite know what season three was. I like not knowing what comes next. If you have a show with a great ensemble and a great bunch of characters, you can invent as you go for a while.”
The second season presently has a freshness rating of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and is nominated for three Critics Choice Awards. Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow all appear in the series.
The Great is produced by Civic Center Media in collaboration with MRC Television (MRC owns The Hollywood Reporter in a joint venture with Penske Media called P-MRC).
