At UFC 298 on February 17, 2024, Mackenzie Dern, a rival for the UFC women’s strawweight title, faced Amanda Lemos, a former competitor for the UFC strawweight title. Dern is one of the most exciting grappling experts in the UFC.
The Brazilian-American 30-year-old was married to professional surfer Wesley Santos for a few years before Dern stated that they were no longer together at the end of last year. They have a daughter together, whose name is Moa, and was born in June 2019.
Dern shared the news on social media and said that she and her ex-husband are still friendly and are committed to raising their daughter well.
Before her fight with Yan Xiaonan at UFC Vegas 61 in October 2022, Mackenzie Dern was going through the early stages of her breakup. Dern lost the fight by majority decision, and it was clear that the stress of going through a breakup had an effect on her performance.
But she got back on track and beat Angela Hill at UFC Vegas 73 to get her first win. Mackenzie Dern told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a media day talk before the fight that her split had made her want to fight even more, saying:

Mackenzie Dern Shared Disturbing Details About Her Divorce
Mackenzie Dern said at first that she was getting along with her ex-husband again after they broke up, but later information revealed that there were claims of domestic violence and abuse. Dern talked on The MMA Hour before her fight against Angela Hill about the rough patch in her relationship with her ex-husband. She said:
“I stayed in my relationship because I believed in the family, and I believe that that’s what God wanted and stuff. But there’s a certain point where you try, try, and try, and things don’t change, and it just keeps getting worse and worse. And then, like I was saying, I wasn’t even able to defend myself. … Like, police were getting called to the house. It was just getting out of control, and going through that in front of your daughter, you don’t want your daughter to witness that.”
