How Did John Candy Pass Away?

Candy had a heart attack on March 4, 1994, while shooting “Wagons East.” He was 43 years old at the time. After a service at Los Angeles’s St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, he was buried in Culver City’s Holy Cross Cemetery. The Second City, his old comedy group, held a one-of-a-kind memorial service that was shown all over Canada.

Candy was added to the Walk of Fame in 1998. A picture of him was put on a postage stamp by Canada Post in 2006 to honor him. To honor Candy on what would have been his 70th birthday, October 30, 2020, was named “John Candy Day” by the mayor of Toronto.

How Did John Candy Became Popular?

At the beginning of his work, Candy got small roles on TV shows like “Dr. Zonk and the Zunkins,” “Cucumber,” and “The ABC Afternoon Playbreak.” Candy became well-known in the 1970s as a cast member of “Second City Television,” a show made by the Toronto arm of The Second City.

On the show, he was known for his parts as Doctor Tongue, Johnny LaRue, and William B. Williams, the sidekick on the talk show. When NBC bought the show in 1981, it became even more famous very quickly. It won two Emmys in 1981 and 1982 for writing for the show.

Candy focused on his acting career after a short break from Second City Television. He was in two movies: Steven Spielberg’s big-budget comedy “1941” and a small part in “Lost and Found” in 1979. Soon after, he went back to Canada and worked on the action film “Double Negative” and the drama “The Courage of Kavik, the Wolf Dog.”

In 1980, he played parole officer Burton Mercer in “The Blues Brothers.” Candy played an Army trainee in “Stripes,” and it went on to be one of the biggest hits of 1981. He did voice work for some characters in the animation movie “Heavy Metal” that same year.

As Tom Hank’s gay brother in the classic love comedy “Splash,” Candy’s big break came when he played the role of a womanizing brother. He also played a part in the 1985 movie “The Last Polka,” which he wrote with Eugene Levy. In “Brewster’s Millions,” he played the best friend of Richard Pryor. Besides that, he was in the Sesame Street movie “Follow That Bird.”

Candy got her first big lead role in Hollywood in Carl Reiner’s “Summer Rental.” Later, he met up with Tom Hank again in “Volunteers,” and in 1985, he had a small role in “The Canadian Conspiracy.” In 1986, he got his second big part in the movie “Armed and Dangerous,” which starred Meg Ryan and Eugene Levy.

He appeared in John Hughes’ “Planes, Trains, & Automobiles” with Steve Martin in 1987. After this, Candy and Hughes started working together.

In 1989, he played the title role in the Hughes film “Uncle Buck.” Additionally, he produced and acted in the NBC animated comedy “Camp Candy” that same year. Both of his children had small roles in the show.
