Hurt worked for the Danville Register & Bee, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch while he was in college at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. After he graduated from college in 1995, his first full-time job was as a replacement worker at The Detroit News during a bitter strike.
He worked there until 2001 when he joined the staff of The Charlotte Observer near Washington, D.C. Hurt was the D.C. Bureau Chief for The New York Post and wrote a news column about the White House for five years. Hurt was a reporter for The Washington Times from 2003 to 2007 when he left to work for The New York Post.

In 2011, he went back to work as a political columnist for The Washington Times. In December 2016, the opinion editor job was given to Hurt. Rich Lowry, the editor of National Review, said of Hurt that he was “an early adopter of Donald Trump’s populism.” Since the 2016 election, Hurt has written many pieces that praise Trump.
