Benedict Cumberbatch will return to the world of the Avengers in the sequel film Doctor Strange 2 in the Multiverse of Madness. Accompanying Strange will also be Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, in what is described as the first horror film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s everything we know.
Doctor Strange 2: What Is The Storyline?
Among the films announced in the Marvel Studios panel of San Diego Comic-Con was also revealed a sequel to the 2016 film Doctor Strange, starring Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Initially, it was supposed to be Scott Derrickson to direct Doctor Strange 2 in the Multiverse of Madness, but in early 2020 Variety has made it known that the director had left the project, by mutual agreement with Marvel Studios, due to creative differences. Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) is the official director of the film.
As for the film’s script, it will be entrusted to the expert hands of Jade Bartlett, as reported exclusively by Collider. The screenwriter is a horror expert, and it seems that this is the mood chosen for Doctor Strange 2. Bartlett has worked on such films as Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know and The Turning.
What is Doctor Strange 2 about? There are still not many advances on the plot of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, thanks to C. Robert Cargill, author of Doctor Strange, we know that one of the film’s enemies will be Karl Mordo.
Therefore, the post-credits scene of the previous movie is fundamental, showing Karl Mordo travelling the world, depriving the sorcerers of their power. There will also be a second enemy, or Nightmare, a being who invades the dreams of others to conquer different dimensions.
Stephen Strange has become one of the most beloved characters in Infinity War and Endgame, given his vital contribution in the fight against Thanos. The sorcerer gave the titan the Time Stone, saving Tony Stark’s life after discovering that he was the key to saving the universe.
So will we see how the Doctor relates to a world without Tony Stark? Surely it will be a darker and darker film than the previous one. The director has called it the first scary film of the MCU. Benedict Cumberbatch added that his character would face threats from the Multiverse that would destroy him.
The story recovers from the events of Spider-Man No Way Home, where a spell Doctor Strange has caused the opening of the Multiverse.
Doctor Strange 2: Who’s In The Cast?
The news on the cast is still limited, so between confirmations and hypotheses, we can undoubtedly say that Benedict Cumberbatch is still Doctor Stephen Strange. The actor has already played his role in several films such as Doctor Strange, Thor Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame.
We can assume that the rest of the main cast from the first film are making a return as well, this includes actor Benedict Wong as Wong, Strange’s right-hand man. There is no news regarding the appearance of Rachel McAdams as the character Christine Palmer. As a confirmed enemy, Chiwetel Ejiofor will be Karl Mordo, while the second Nightmare antagonist doesn’t have a face yet.
