She married a part-time car seller soon after her senior year of high school. She graduated from O’Fallon Technical High School in St. Louis. The marriage lasted five years, and she says her husband cheated on her a lot and convinced her to steal her boss’s paychecks.
After her split, she went to a lot of bars in the area before she met Dave Meyer, an engineering draftsman. On January 7, 1967, they got married. Joyce Meyer also says that she heard God call her name during a deep prayer while she was going to work one morning in 1976. She became a Christian when she was nine years old, but her sadness made her grow in her faith.
Later that day, she came home from a beauty session “full of liquid love.” That night, she was “drunk with the Spirit of God” at the bowling alley. For a short time, she went to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in St. Louis, which is part of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.
In the early morning, she started teaching a Bible class at a nearby restaurant. She also got involved with Life Christian Center, a dynamic church in Fenton. She became the church’s associate leader in just a few years.
