Vladimir Putin’s Early Life

Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952, in what is now called Saint Petersburg, Russia. His mother, Maria, worked in a factory, and his father, Vladimir Spiridonovich, served in the Soviet Navy. When he was twelve years old, he started learning martial arts like Judo and sambo and became really good at Judo, earning a black belt. He also learned to speak German fluently while studying at Saint Petersburg High School 281.

After finishing high school, Putin went to Leningrad State University (not Saint Petersburg University) to study Law, and he graduated in 1975. It was during his time at the university that he met Anatoly Sobchak, who helped write the Russian constitution and was a teacher of business law. Sobchak had a big influence on Putin’s career.

Vladimir Putin’s Impressive Career

Putin’s journey in politics began after he finished studying law. He spent 16 years working for the KGB, a Soviet intelligence agency. He received training at the 401st KGB school in Leningrad and then got extra training at the Yuri Andropov Red Banner Institute in Moscow in 1984.

After that, he worked as a translator in East Germany from 1985 to 1990. When the Communist government in East Germany fell, he went back to Leningrad and reconnected with Anatoly Sobchak at Leningrad State University’s International Affairs Department.

In 1991, during a military takeover of the Soviet government, Putin said he left the KGB because he didn’t want to be a part of the new intelligence operation that was forming.

Sobchak, his former professor, became the City Manager of Leningrad, and Putin took on the role of the president of the Committee for External Relations, which gave him more experience in politics. Then, in 1998, Boris Yeltsin appointed him as the head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), which replaced the KGB as Russia’s main intelligence and defense agency.

In 1999, Yeltsin made him the Prime Minister of Russia, and later, he asked Putin to be his successor as the president. Putin served as Russia’s president from 2000 to 2008, with a break in the middle when he was Prime Minister from 1999 to 2000 and again from 2008 to 2012.

Over time, Putin has become a well-known figure, but he has faced criticism from international leaders and political experts for his handling of civil rights and foreign policies. Many people in the West have called his leadership in Russia “anti-democratic.” Despite this, he has remained popular among the Russian people since he first ran for president in 1999 after Boris Yeltsin stepped down.
