The development of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 began much before the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in theaters. We assure you that the third installment, as well as a Knuckles-centric spinoff series, is in the works. We know the movie will be released, but have yet to see any details on the third Sonic film.
With that caveat, here is all we know about Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic the Hedgehog, a film adaptation of the popular video game, was a box office smash for Paramount and SEGA. The studio decided to follow up on one of the year’s highest-grossing movies with a sequel that would hopefully do as well.
Filmmaker Jeff Fowler’s Sonic film series chronicles the adventures of everyone’s favorite hedgehog throughout its time on planet Earth. Sonic, played by Ben Schwartz, has taken on the likes of Jim Carrey’s villainous Dr. Robotnik, saved the world in a race, and won a dance-off in Fortnite.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Release Date
If there are no setbacks, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will race into theaters on December 20, 2024. It was announced in early August 2022, so fans will have to wait a little longer than usual for Sonic’s big-screen exploits. As compared to the first two films of the year, this one is a departure.

The financial success of these films at the box office proves that releasing them around Christmas is a smart move. There has been no word on when production on the third film will begin, but given the extensive CGI work required for the first two films, we expect it to begin no later than 2023.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Cast
Ben Schwartz and James Marsden, two of our closest friends here at Sonic, are returning to the cast, which is exciting news for fans of the series. Schwartz provides the voice for our blue hero, Sonic, and James Marsden voices Sheriff Tom.
Maddie, Tom’s wife (Tika Sumpter), and Rachel, her outspoken sister (Natasha Rothwell), are expected to return. If Rachael is cast in the film, then Shemar Moore might reprise his role as her fiance/undercover GUN agent. There’s some terrible news about Sonic’s casting, unfortunately. Jim Carrey, who played the perfect Dr. Robotnik in the first two Sonic movies, is not expected to return to the character.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Plot
You won’t find any official plot synopsis for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 anywhere. With that said, the conclusion and dramatic post-credits sequence of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 lead one to believe that Shadow the Hedgehog will be the next film enemy to oppose our beloved blue hero.
Ultimately, Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails work together to defeat Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Following Sonic’s successful reclaim of Master Emerald from Dr. Robotnik, he and his new family have made it their goal to keep the ancient power source safe.

Although they were unable to locate Dr. Robotnik’s remains, it is possible that they will run into the evil genius again. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the end-credits scene added a new foe named Shadow to go along with the returning Dr. Robotnik, who is still on the hunt for Master Emerald.
After cleaning up the debris after Sonic and Dr. Robotnik’s most recent fight, GUN (the Guardian Units of Nations) discovered the hidden coordinates to an abandoned facility where “Project Shadow” was in progress. In the preview clip, we see a black hedgehog open his eyes and prepare to cause chaos.
How Well Did Sonic 2 Perform at The Box Office?
Paramount’s decision to make a third Sonic movie follows the success of the second, which grossed over $400 million worldwide. In the middle of a global upheaval, the film business began to rebound on April 8, 2022, and one of the most successful movies for the sector was Sonic 2.
Indeed, Sonic 2 was more successful than the original Sonic. Like with previous Sonic games, I expect Sonic 3 to be a profitable venture for Paramount. When it comes to adaptations of video games, Sonic 2 has the best opening weekend to date, surpassing the first Sonic’s record by a wide margin.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer
As of September 2022, there has been no progress made on Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and production has thus far ceased. Four months before the sequel’s actual release date, in December 2021, the first trailer was revealed, so we have some time to wait.
