Sondra Locke Death
Oscar-nominated actress Sondra Locke, whose romance with Clint Eastwood ended in palimony and fraud lawsuits, has passed away. A sprightly 74 years old.
According to her death certificate, obtained by the Associated Press, Locke died of cardiac arrest on November 3 at her Los Angeles residence from breast and bone cancer.
The blonde, waiflike actress made a dazzling breakthrough in Robert Ellis Miller’s The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968), an adaptation of the Carson McCullers novel. Her performance of the teenage Mick Kelly opposite Alan Arkin earned her an Academy Award nomination.
In October of 1975, she and Eastwood started dating on the production of the Civil War film The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976). After saving up enough money, they were able to purchase a 1931-built mansion in Bel Air.
When they started dating, Locke started appearing in almost all of Eastwood’s Warner Bros. films, including The Gauntlet (1977), Every Which Way But Loose (1978), Bronco Billy (1980), Any Which Way You Can (1980), and Sudden Impact (1983).
While Eastwood reportedly required she work with him alone, singer Rosemary Clooney approached Locke directly about playing her in a biography for CBS in 1982.
She played country music singer Lynn Halsey-Taylor in the films Every Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can, for which she shared billing with an orangutan.
In a 1996 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Locke noted, “I didn’t want to be up there with the orangutan.” “I was there because [Eastwood] asked me to be there and I was in love. I had a great time working with him, and we got along great. However, I did not seek that.
Locke sued her 14-year live-in partner for alimony in April 1989. As part of the resulting settlement, she was given a three-year, $1.5 million contract to work on film development and directing for Warner Bros. The studio, she claimed, neither greenlit nor hired her to direct any of the thirty concepts she pitched.
For the second time, in June 1995, Locke sued Eastwood for fraud, willful interference with her capacity to earn a living, and breaking his financial commitment to her, alleging that he was the one who secretly financed the “bogus” arrangement that “created a dead end for her career,” according to her attorney. She stated categorically that she earned nothing in 1994 and 1995.
