How did it Work out that Johnson was the one to be Nominated for Speaker?
The Republican Party’s nomination process for Johnson has been contentious. After McCarthy’s historic ouster as House speaker, the Republicans lost their floor leader with only a slim majority in the chamber.
After McCarthy was dismissed, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and right-wing Rep. Jim Jordan faced off in a secret ballot voting for the Republican conference to choose a new speaker nominee. The next day, Scalise withdrew his nomination since he didn’t have enough votes to win.
Although the party was still deeply divided, House Republicans ultimately chose Jordan as their nominee. According to those present, Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia, a last-minute rival to Jordan, earned around 80 votes. Jordan brought his nomination to the floor, where it was defeated three times in as many days. At Tuesday’s conference meeting, the Republicans removed him as the nominee, and nine Republicans ultimately ran for speaker.
