His father, Jimmy, was a recovering heroin addict, musician, and Vietnam veteran who had abandoned his wife and five children when Tracy was six years old. His mother, Alicia, was a stay-at-home mom. Morgan was bullied as a child and was raised in the Tompkins Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
Tracy attended DeWitt Clinton High School, where he was a sophomore when he learned in 1985 that his father had become infected with A*DS as a result of using hypodermic needles. In 1987, Jimmy’s illness grew worse, and Tracy—who had just been married—left school to take care of him. November of that year saw Jimmy’s death, and Morgan had momentarily turned to crack sales to help support his new bride and her two young children.
