You’re about to be one happy fan, because Cruel Summer, Freeform’s ’90s-inspired smash hit, is finally coming back for a second season. In April, the network announced via Instagram that it would be returning after a whirlwind debut season loaded with memories and twists. but, there is a catch.
The second season of Cruel Summer will not only take place in a new decade (the 2000s) but will also have a different storyline from the previous season, confirming the show’s status as an anthology.
Instantly, we’re transported back in time to the days of AOL IM and low-rise jeans.
In late July, producer and popular celebrity mom, Jessica Biel posted an Instagram from what appears to be the set of the program, prompting viewers to voice their concerns about the show’s comeback and what the new season will bring in the comments section.
Cruel Summer Season 2 Release Date
There has been no news or confirmation on when the second season of Cruel Summer will premiere as of July 2022. Jessica Biel (yes, that Jessica Biel) has confirmed that additional episodes of Cruel Summer will air in 2022.
However, it was supposed to premiere in April during the first season but has already been delayed. They didn’t even begin filming until that month (more on that later), so we’re looking at the end of the year at the earliest.
When the show will return is anyone’s guess at this point. However, assuming Jessica is correct and the 2022 schedule is still in effect, we believe they have been shifted to the fall/winter window. That means you can expect to see it in the wild around the months of October and November.

Cruel Summer Season 2 Cast
As the new millennium begins, “Cruel Summer” has opted for an entirely new cast. According to the official synopsis, “The Goldbergs” star Sadie Stanley will play Megan Landry, an inflexible computer programmer.
After an enigmatic exchange student named Isabella stays with her family, Megan finds it easier to appreciate the present. But Megan’s world is flipped upside down as truths about Isabella’s background are revealed, and she begins to question who she can trust.
Deadline claimed in April that Lexi Underwood, star of “Little Fires Everywhere,” would play Isabella after the role was “reworked” from Eloise Payet.
According to the synopsis, Griffin Gluck (from “Locke & Key”) will play Luke Chambers, Megan’s childhood best friend who comes from a “blue-collar” family in contrast to Megan’s “prestigious” family. Luke is fighting to find his own identity apart from that of his powerful father.
Lisa Yamada, star of “Little Fires Everywhere,” will make multiple appearances this season as Parker, a famous musician whose outlook worsens as her life gets worse.
In Chatham, Sean Blakemore of “Greenleaf” will play Sheriff Myer, a man who follows a fairly traditional and rigid approach to law enforcement but who may crack under the weight of solving the town’s first significant crime.
Cruel Summer Season 2 Plot
Right about now is when things start to become tricky. At the end of the first season, there was a huge reveal: Jeanette had broken into Martin Harris’ house on another time she never mentioned, and while she didn’t see Kate, she heard her shouting for help from the basement.
There was clearly a need for greater information about the extent of Jeannette’s status-obsessed sociopathy. However, we won’t be covering that in Season 2.
According to Deadline, the show’s renewal in June 2021 prompted discussions about adapting the show into an anthology.
The president of Freeform, Tara Duncan, “agreed that it might contain a fresh plot with the same cast or, in anthology form, use the device of two points of view using several timelines with a new ensemble,” according to the report.
Given the success of anthology formats like True Detective, Fargo, and The Sinner in the mystery genre in recent years, it seemed plausible that the show might use this approach.
Although there was no word about the status of Season 2 for months, in April 2022, The Hollywood Reporter eventually released an update that officially stated the show was becoming an anthology.
While the premise is new, the program will be carrying over certain components from the first season that viewers found so engaging. According to THR’s report, viewers may look forward to another drama about the complexities of adolescent friendships that is set in the past and told from multiple perspectives.
The show is rumored to be themed around the year 2000, so Y2K fans among Generation Z should rejoice at the prospect of even more fashion inspiration (and, presumably, the Y2K scare).
We are told that it follows “the rise and demise of a strong teenage connection” in “an exquisite seaside village in the Pacific Northwest.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “the season twists and turns as it traces the early friendship between Megan, Isabella, and Megan’s best friend Luke, the love triangle that evolved, and the mystery that would affect all of their lives moving forward.”
Few specifics have been revealed about the mystery, but if Season 2 is anything like the first, we’re in for a wild journey.
